Saudi Couple Set For June Trial In Slavery Case
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) ―
A Saudi Arabian couple pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges including kidnapping and sexual assault stemming from allegations they kept an Indonesian woman as a virtual slave for 4 years in their Arapahoe County home.
Homaidan Al-Turki, 37, and his wife, Sarah Khonaizan, also face an April 24 trial on federal charges of forced labor, involuntary servitude and harboring an illegal immigrant.
They each face state charges of extortion, false imprisonment and kidnapping. Al-Turki also faces 12 state counts of sexual assault.
Arapahoe County District Judge Marilyn Antrim has set a June 13 trial for the couple. She also has denied a defense motion asking for separate trials.
A federal indictment released last summer accused Al-Turki of sexually assaulting the Indonesian woman repeatedly from 2000 to 2004. During that time, the indictment said the woman was paid less than $2 a day to cook, clean and care for the couple's 5 children.
The couple also faces a lawsuit by the Labor Department that said they owe the woman $62,500 in unpaid wages.
