A former teacher accused of having sexual contact with a student at
Brighton Charter High School made her first appearance in court Tuesday.
Carrie McCandless, 29, was at the Larimer County Justice Center because the charges stem from an overnight school trip to Estes Park.
McCandless was fired from her teaching job at the school following allegations of a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old male student.
Both McCandless and her attorney declined to comment following the very brief hearing.
She waived the formal reading of charges of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
McCandless is also married to the principal of the school.
She faces up to 12 years in prison if she's convicted but is out of jail on $20,000 bond.
The next court hearing for the former teacher will be Dec. 8 where she will make her first appearance in front of a district court judge.
Leaders of Brighton Charter High School now say staff will be trained to quickly report allegations of criminal activity. That promise comes after police and parents said they were left in the dark for too long.
Last week,
David Mundy Sr. resigned as school board president because of another incident. He is accused of trying to cover up charges of sexual abuse against his son,
David Mundy Jr., a former substitute teacher at the charter school.
