Mountain Lion Captured After Killing Pet

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) ― A mountain lion that witnesses said walked into a house in a neighborhood, ate a pet cat and the cat's dry cat food before being captured will be rehabilitated, wildlife officials said Monday.

The 50-pound young mountain lion, captured after the Sunday afternoon incident, will be released in the wild in the fall after it gains maturity at a rehabilitation center over the summer, said Tyler Baskfield, spokesman for the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

"The lion would have had a tough time defending its territory, and might have ended up right back there eating some other people's pets in about two weeks," Baskfield said.

In a blog posted on the Rocky Mountain News' Web site, neighborhood resident Aaron Harber wrote that the mountain lion entered the house through a door used for Mungit, a 15-year-old cat.

"The lion had entered the home, killed and ate poor Mungit, and then ate the dry cat food stored in the house," Harber wrote.

Baskfield said encounters between pets and mountain lions are common in Boulder, where some neighborhoods edge right up to the foothills and the landmark Flatirons.

Last month officials killed a 5-year-old, 84-pound mountain lion suspected in an attack on a 7-year-old boy near Boulder. The boy suffered a broken jaw, cuts and bruises.
