Women who have uterine fibroids are now getting a state of the art treatment at Boulder Community Hospital. Doctors said the hysteroscopic morcellator will soon be the standard treatment for the disease across the country.
"This is one of the best things we've ever seen," Dr. Christine Hansen at the Boulder Women's Clinic said.
The hysteroscopic morcellator can shave away uterine fibroids and suction them out in a matter of minutes.
"So it's like a vacuum cleaner with a rotor rooter on it," Hansen said.
The device has a tiny camera and doesn't require a large incision. The whole procedure can be done under local anesthesia.
"Surgery takes 20 minutes, they go home that day and go back to work in two days," Hansen said.
Standard treatments have removed the uterus or used a sharp wire to remove the fibroid.
Hysteroscopic morcellator treatments are FDA approved and doctors said most insurance companies have been covering the procedure.
