CU Names Two Professors To Panel Probing Churchill

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) ― Two professors were named Wednesday to replace two other professors who resigned from the panel investigating allegations of research misconduct against a University of Colorado professor who likened some Sept. 11 victims to one of the architects of the Holocaust.

Robert N. Clinton, a law professor at Arizona State University and a faculty member of that school's American Indian Studies Program, and Jose E. Limon, professor of American and English literature at the University of Texas at Austin and director of that university's Center for Mexican-American Studies, are joining the panel, CU spokeswoman Pauline Hale said in a statement.

They replace Bruce Johansen, a communications professor who studies American Indians at University of Nebraska at Omaha, who resigned in November after questions were raised about whether he could be objective about Ward Churchill's work, and Robert A. Williams, professor of law and American Indian studies at the University of Arizona.

"We are pleased that professors Limon and Clinton have agreed to serve in this important capacity," Hale said in a statement. "They bring strong credentials through scholarship, teaching and leadership in their respective fields of study."

Churchill's essay comparing some World Trade Center victims to Nazi Adolf Eichman, which was widely publicized early last year, touched off a firestorm and an inquiry by the university into whether he could be fired over his statements. The Committee on Research Misconduct began its investigation after officials determined Churchill was protected by the First Amendment.

In September a faculty committee recommended investigating seven allegations involving plagiarism, misuse of others' work and falsification and fabrication in his research work.

Churchill has denied the allegations.
