CU Picks 5 Educators To Investigate Churchill

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) ― The University of Colorado has identified five educators investigating allegations of research misconduct against a CU professor who likened some Sept. 11 victims to a Nazi.

CU released the names Tuesday in response to a Freedom of Information Act request from The Denver Post.

The committee is looking into allegations of plagiarism and fabrication against Ward Churchill, a tenured professor of ethnic studies. The investigation began after Churchill's essay about the terrorist attacks was widely publicized early this year.

Churchill has denied the allegations.

The panel is headed by CU law professor Marianne Wesson. Other members include CU history professor Marjorie McIntosh, CU sociology department chairman Michael Radelet, University of Nebraska Native American studies professor Bruce Johansen and University of Arizona law and American Indian studies professor Robert Williams.

David Lane, Churchill's attorney, said Churchill will take a paid break during the spring semester to work on several books. The time off is compensation for teaching extra courses in past semesters, Lane said.

Churchill, 53, requested a sabbatical for next semester, but CU hasn't decided on the request, stating the decision depends on the outcome of the investigation.
