Deadly Accident Raises Concerns Near Ft. Lupton

FORT LUPTON, Colo. (CBS4) ― A car accident in Fort Lupton that killed two young children and left four others injured is raising concerns from nearby residents.

It happened on Highway 52 when police say two cars hit head on, and then another car approaching the accident scene couldn't stop and slammed into them.

"It was probably one of the worst accidents I'd ever seen," said Linda Blanche, who lives near the Highway 52. "We saw them working on two people doing CPR on the side of the road."

The highway has two lanes … one eastbound and one westbound with nothing in between.

"It's hard to get out of this area and the cars are going high speeds," Blanche said.

The speed limit reaches 65 miles per hour both ways causing big concerns for nearby residents.

"People are just flying down or flying up and these cars are just pulling out doing 20 to 30 miles per hour and these cars are flying down doing 80," said Ramon Ramirez.

Ramirez knows the danger in that area firsthand. His sister was hurt in December when her car was broadsided on Highway 52.

"She looked in her rearview mirror and this car turned on his lights and boom just smacked her ... she didn't even see him," Ramirez said.

The Fort Lupton police chief said another accident happened just last month.

"This is the second serious accident we've had right in this exact same location in the past couple of months," Chief Ron Grannis.

The string of recent accidents is raising concerns and making many want change.

"A lane has to be done in order for the cars to start slowing down," Ramirez said.

"They need to either lower the speed limit or put a light up and it's just not a good thing," Blanche said.

The accident Saturday night killed a 4 and 5-year-old. Chief Grannis said it was still unclear if the children were properly restrained because witnesses pulled them out of the car before police arrived.

Investigators said it doesn't appear that alcohol or drugs were involved.
