Fans Get First Look At 'Zero Waste' Folsom Field

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) ― Thousands of fans crowded into Folsom Field to watch the University of Colorado Buffaloes play Saturday, but there was something missing -- unnecessary waste.

Folsom Field no longer has trash cans. Instead there are bins for recycling all kinds of waste. It's part of the university's "zero waste" pledge. CU's sports program is the first to tackle the waste-free idea.

"It really started with our students and our students recognized the sustainability; recycling is very, very important," said Mike Bohn, CU Athletic Director. "They kind of reached out to us and said, 'Hey what do you think about doing something significant about being the nation's first major sporting venue, college or pro, to establish a zero-waste initiative.' We said, 'Let's do it.'"

This season it's expected the environmental program will recycle 90 percent of all trash at the field.

The waste will be turned into compost, which will come back to campus as fertilizer.
