Breastfeeding mothers and their babies gathered on the steps of Colorado's state Capitol Friday to celebrate a law that helps them make the transition of going back to work.
The Workplace Accomodations for Nursing Mothers Act goes into effect in Colorado on Aug. 5.
It helps mothers continue breastfeeding after returning to the office, which doctors say has health benefits for both moms and babies.
"It has been shown that breastfeeding prevents many infections, allergies, diabetes, chronic bowel disease, cancer and even obesity, and mothers benefit from its preventative effects for breast cancer and ovarian cancer," pediatrician Dr. Maya Bunik said.
Colorado is the 16th state to require employers to provide breaks and a private place for mothers to nurse or pump.
