A bear in Boulder who is suspected of going through trash

As many as 12,000 black bears in Colorado are waking up from hibernation, and they are hungry.
One of them was recently going through trash cans near Table Mesa and Broadway in Boulder looking for meals.
That prompted the city to go door-to-door to warn neighbors. Volunteers are leaving bags with informational brochures about bears and a notice about the bear in Boulder. That bear hasn't shown any aggression, but the city doesn't want to take any chances.
"A fed bear is a dead bear, so if we keep trash away they're safe," city of Boulder volunteer Debora Martin said.
City officials say people who leave their trash out the night before and don't bear-proof it are essentially inviting bears to dinner.
Some other things homeowners don't want to leave out include open grills, bird feeders and pet food.
Division of Wildlife officials say they've heard about 6 bear sightings along the Front Range in the last few weeks.
Anyone caught feeding a bear in Colorado faces a minimum fine of $68.
