Ault Firefighter Killed On Way To Call

PIERCE, Colo. (AP) ― A volunteer firefighter headed to assist the victim of a medical emergency in nearby Ault was killed Saturday morning when his nearly new tanker-pumper rig overturned.

Shane Stewart, 33, of Pierce, was alone in the truck, said Capt. Roger Moore of the Eaton Fire Protection District. The Colorado State Patrol said Stewart went off the edge of a road, overcorrected and rolled the truck, which landed on its roof around 6:20 a.m. Troopers said Stewart was ejected.

"This was a very energetic man who loved firefighting," said Moore. "He loved serving the community. Great kid." Stewart's brother and father were also part of the fire department, he said.

Stewart is survived by a wife and two children, Moore said.

The medical emergency victim was transported to an area hospital and was in stable condition.

Mourners were gathering for a candlelight vigil Saturday night at the fire station in Pierce, 63 miles north of Denver.

On Friday, seven Durango firefighters were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries when working a fire caused by an explosion at a restaurant.
