The sheriff in Arapahoe County and the mother of an apparent murder victim are pleading for information about the death of a man they say was brilliant and had a bright future.
Andrew Graham's body was found in a yard in Centennial last Friday, not far from the home he lived in with his mother Cyndi. On Sunday mom Cyndi Graham and Sheriff Grayson Robinson discussed the case, with both Graham and Robinson lamenting the loss of someone so young and so promising.
"He was in such a good place. He was getting ready to go back to graduate school and he had a plan for his life and he was playing his guitar and getting very good at it. He just had such a life ahead of him," Cyndi Graham said.
Graham, 23, was returning from a house hunting trip in Boulder on Thursday night. Authorities say he was last seen getting off the RTD light rail line at the Interstate 25 and County Line station at 11:40 p.m. His body was discovered early Friday morning near Phillips and Yosemite, about a mile away. There were no immediate signs of trauma on his body, according to investigators.
Police said one person has come forward saying they heard a gunshot the night Graham was killed. They now plan to review security video from the light rail station.
On Monday the Arapahoe County coroner's autopsy was completed and it was concluded Graham died of a "single gunshot wound to the trunk."
His personal belongings -- including cash -- were found several blocks away from the crime scene.
A reward for information leading to an arrest is being offered in the case. Officials say the crime appears to be random in nature.
"We know that Andrew Graham was a gentle man. He was a man with purpose, and he was a man with a very, very promising future in life. It is outrageous that that purpose and that promise has been taken," Robinson said.
Cyndi Graham says her only son was quiet, thoughtful and not prone to being involved in conflicts.
"Oh, everyone loved him, you know. He was just a good guy to be around. He didn't have any enemies," she said.
Graham was about to begin graduate school in engineering next semester at the University of Colorado in Boulder. His mom said she refused to let him enlist in the Army because she wanted to keep him from harm.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.
