Aurora Family Hopes To Fullfill HIV Patient's Wish
by Arturo Santiago
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) ―
The family of a young man from Aurora is asking for help in what might wind up being his dying wish: a trip to Disney World.
Aaron Weiss, 20, suffers from HIV and lives in a state of constant pain. He takes more than 80 doses of medication every day, needs dialysis every night and essentially has the mind of a 10-year-old.
Weiss' courage has already helped him beat numerous life threatening illnesses, but he and his family said they know that he could die at any time.
Weiss, who was born with HIV, was adopted at the age of only 2 months. He's has health problems ever since.
"I can't handle my sickness anymore," he said. "I just can't handle it."
Because Weiss is too old for the Make-a-Wish Foundation to help out in granting what he says is his one true desire, his family said they are undertaking the effort to get him to Florida and Disney World.
"I think it would be a blessing for him to be able to forget his troubles just for a little while and really enjoy the moment and be happy," Weiss' brother Saul said.
"This is a chance at life; this is a chance at normalcy; this is a celebration," Linda Weiss, Aaron's mother, said. "It is not just a desire -- it is vital to him."
Weiss' family figures that with the complications related to his illness, it would cost about $12,000 to make the trip.
Linda Weiss also said that she hopes that when the time comes for Aaron, she hopes that he can "go without pain, that it doesn't last a long time and that he gets some joy at this part of his life."
