They're called "Mystery" or "Secret Shoppers" and get paid to shop and evaluate the service of a store and its employees. But many people are finding out just when they thought they had gotten such a job, they had been tricked.
"I found it fascinating that you go out and shop with someone else's money and all you have to do is do a report on what you found," said Deeta Boganey from Commerce City.
Her assignment was to go to a Walmart store and evaluate it for such things as appearance and customer service. She was told she would be paid $300 per assignment. "I told my friends I finally found a job as a mystery shopper and I'm excited about it," said Boganey.
With her instructions came a check for $2,825 made out to her. But she thought the instructions sounded a little odd: spend $30 doing the assignment at Walmart, and send $2,470 by Moneygram, which was also to be evaluated, to a man in Atlanta, Ga.
"When I received the check and it was such a large amount to mail to a person in Atlanta, it didn't feel right to me," said Boganey.
Her suspicion seemed well justified. The check was not valid.
A search of the internet reveals numerous warnings of similar scams. So does the Colorado Attorney General's office. "Typically what will happen after you mail the 90 percent or whatever they requested your bank will call you and that money or certified money will have bounced," said Mike Saccone, Colorado Attorney General Spokesman.
