AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) ―
Aurora Fire Chief Casey Jones is retiring as of Friday afternoon, 2 weeks after the city suspended him in the face of evidence he was playing golf on city time and accusations he had an affair with a subordinate.
CBS4 Investigator Brian Maass reports the retirement comes after Jones met Friday afternoon with Deputy City Manager Frank Ragan. Ragan said Jones had been talking about retiring for a long time and he came to this decision on his own.
Jones, 58, will remain with the city on a contractual basis to help wrap up several projects. All are expected to be completed by November.
Jones, who had been Chief of the 300 member department since 2002, was suspended with pay April 27. That came after CBS4 investigations found he had apparently played golf during normal work hours on as many as 23 weekdays during an 8 month period.
Beyond the tee time problems, a CBS4 investigation also found an Internet blog, where a former Assistant City Attorney accused Jones of carrying on an affair with the City Attorney's wife. Both Jones and the woman have not commented on those accusations.
The city launched an investigation into the golf and affair accusations. That investigation had not been completed as of Friday.
The city will begin the search for a new fire chief next week.
