Denver Police Investigate Harassment Of Officer

DENVER (CBS4) ― CBS4 has learned that the Denver Police Department is investigating whether one of its officers is being harassed because fellow officers believe he is gay. The matter is now under investigation by the Denver Police Internal Affairs Bureau.

When one joins the Denver Police Department their sexual orientation is not a matter of record or discussion.

The male officer claims he received harassing calls at his home that he believes came from a fellow officer.

"Well the Denver Police Department doesn't tolerate any harassment of any kind and when an officer has alleged that he has been harassed on the basis of sexuality or any other reason the department will investigate it diligently," Vicki Ferrari with the Denver Police Department said.

The officer receiving the harassing calls said the person on the other end said, "We know you're gay, we don't want you bringing that (expletive) to work."

There was another call stating," Look, we don't care what you do in your personal life, but we don't want to hear about (expletives)."

"It's positive that we know that people are responding right away. Unfortunately we've seen cases where either the report won't be taken or won't be taken seriously," Kellly Costello with the gay community's Colorado Anti-Violence Program said. "I don't know if that's different coming from someone within the police department."

The officer attempted to retrieve the caller's phone number, but it had been blocked. Internal Affairs officers have now requested a search warrant seeking Verizon phone records of calls to the officer's home.

A statement issued by the Gay Lesbian and Transgender Community Center of Colorado says it "is sad to hear when any employee is suffering harassment in the workplace based solely on sexual orientation … this happens far too often."

Denver police say any harassment inside or out of the department will not be tolerated.

CBS4 tried to reach the officer identified as the victim of the harassment. So far he has not returned the calls.
