A woman who got pregnant after being sexually assaulted by a city employee inside a city facility says Denver owes her some financial compensation.
Tyiesha Neely was 17 when she was placed in the custody of Denver's Department of Human Services. She was put in the residential Family Crisis Center, supposedly a secure facility, but staff member Elliot Price sexually assaulted her there.
Afterwards, Neely got pregnant and gave birth to Kevin.
Price was fired and sent to prison, but Neely said she needs more than that, despite the fact that she says she was partially responsible for the encounter.
Court records CBS4 obtained indicate Price was seen several times entering the facility's girls dormitory, where Neely was staying.
"I did go through a lot and I figured with me in the crisis center I should have been safe," she said.
While city officials say they have not yet received any demand for money from Neely and there is no lawsuit, they say they have made adjustments to their policies in the wake of their case.
They have upgraded the surveillance camera system, increased internal security at the crisis center and told employees they can't be at the facility when they are off duty.
"We hire staff properly. We do extensive background checks," Steve Bates, director of the facility, told CBS4.
Civil rights activist Alvertis Simmons is trying to help Neely in the case.
"This young lady needs help. She's homeless, her son is homeless. Her son didn't ask to be here," Simmons said.
"I feel like it wasn't fair because (Price going to prison) was all that happened. They sent him away so they did something," Neely said.
