Eavesdropping Suspected: Jail Workers Suspended
Written by CBS4 Investigator Brian Maass
ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) ―
A veteran Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant and two civilian supervisors have been suspended and could face criminal charges after being accused of routinely listening in to personal phone calls made by, and received by, their co-workers.
CBS4 Investigator Brian Maass reports that the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department placed the three on leave with pay several weeks ago after learning of the allegations.
Following an internal investigation, the sheriff's department recently presented a case to the Arapahoe County D.A.'s office indicating felony eavesdropping charges might be warranted. The D.A.'s office has not made a charging decision.
According to information compiled by CBS4, the three are accused of utilizing a feature of the jail's internal phone system that allowed them to listen in on personal calls made by, and received by, other jail employees. Investigators suspect the eavesdropping had been going on for months, but was confined to tapping in to phone calls of other jail workers.
Reached by phone Friday afternoon, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said the feature on the jail phone system that allowed the eavesdropping was disabled as soon as he learned of the accusations.
He said if prosecutors do file criminal charges, all three will be placed on leave without pay.
