Shoe Bomber's Supermax Restrictions Expire June 17

FLORENCE, Colo. (AP/CBS4) ― A federal prosecutor said special prison restrictions will expire next week for the man who tried to destroy a trans-Atlantic flight in 2001 with explosives hidden in his shoes.

Convicted shoe bomber Richard Reid is serving three life sentences at the maximum-security prison in Florence, known as Supermax.

Reid filed a lawsuit against the Bureau of Prisons and Justice Department claiming the restrictions placed on him after he arrived at the prison in 2003 denied him the ability to practice his Muslim faith, to participate in educational and recreational activities, and to contact reporters.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Susan Prose wrote in documents filed in U.S. District Court on Tuesday that the measures will expire Wednesday, June 17, and won't be renewed.

Court papers filed by the government indicate Reid had refused 58 meals as of early April. He was then involuntarily fed and hydrated.
