Federal Trial Stops, US Judge 'Under The Weather'

DENVER (CBS4) ― A federal trial over drugs and firearms came to a stop this week after the chief federal district judge in Colorado called in sick.

Chief Judge Edward Nottingham's clerk said Nottingham is "under the weather."

The trial of Charles Castaneda began Tuesday and is scheduled to run six days. But Nottingham, the presiding judge, called in sick both Wednesday and Thursday.

The trial is now scheduled to resume next Monday, according to Nottingham's clerk.

She declined to discuss Nottingham's illness or how unusual it may or may not be for Nottingham to suspend a trial due to illness.

The 60-year-old Nottingham has been under investigation by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit for judicial misconduct. He previously admitted to indiscretions at a downtown topless club and a Denver television station linked Nottingham to a high priced escort service that is under federal investigation.

Nottingham has been a federal judge for nearly 20 years and has been chief judge since 2007.
