Cancer Center Offers Way To 'Stand Up 2 Cancer'

Written by CBS4 special projects producer Libby Smith
DENVER (CBS4) ― Cancer is the number one cause of death in the United States. Stand Up To Cancer is a national movement aimed at changing that statistic.

"For people struggling with this disease, or those who will be diagnosed, scientific breakthroughs can be a matter of life or death - literally.  We want everyone to know that they can make a difference in this fight," CBS Evening News anchor, Katie Couric said in a press release.

Couric along with Charles Gibson of ABC's World News, and Brian Williams of NBC Nightly News announced a one-hour special fundraising event.  The Stand Up To Cancer special will air from 7-8MDT on all three networks.  The star-studded event offers updated information about cutting-edge cancer research and an way to get involved through donations.

"We hope to entertain you, educate you, move and inspire you," said Laura Ziskin, producer of the special.

In Colorado, The University of Colorado Cancer Center will host a free, open-to-the public viewing party for the occasion. Nearly 50 of Colorado's top cancer researchers will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the cancer care that's offered right here in the Rocky Mountain Region.

One of the biggest advances in cancer care is "translational research" - translating the research discoveries into cures in patients.  In the "translational research" model, research scientists pair up with practicing doctors to work on how what's happening in the lab can happen in the patient.

UCCC is a world leader in "translational cancer research". UCCC is the only cancer center in the region that the National Cancer Institute has designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.

You can meet with and talk to experts in breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, ovarian and gynecological cancer, thyroid cancer, pediatric cancer, cancer survivorship and cancer drug development.

The University of Colorado Cancer Center watch party is Friday, September 5th from 6-8pm at the Anschutz Cancer Pavilion at the University of Colorado Cancer Center on the Anschutz Medical Campus.
