Thanksgiving dinner is a long standing tradition at Deane Elementary School in Lakewood, but this year they're doing things a little healthier. They've added some healthier options to the menu and a fun run after their big meal.
Every year, Deane Elementary School opens its doors to students' families. They serve up 700 plates piled high with turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn. This year there is salad and fruit on the menu.
"A nutritious meal which is very good for the kids," one father told CBS4.
Parents and siblings join the festivities. For some of these families this will be the only Thanksgiving dinner they get.
"It's a great opportunity for parents to come in and be apart of this," said Leigh Pies, Instructional Coach at Deane Elementary School.
For the first time this year, school officials added a Turkey Trot to the tradition. Students, teachers, and families had the opportunity to run or walk around the track in the park behind the school. From kindergartners to 6th graders, the lesson this holiday is that nutrition and exercise can be a part of every holiday tradition.
"Health and exercise contributes to student achievement, so we're all about doing what's best for kids," Pies added.
Deane Elementary School is CBS4's Fit 4 Colorado Strong School. Throughout the school year, Deane has committed to fostering a healthier environment for its students with the help of CBS4, American On the Move, HealthOne, Anthem Foundation, and Whole Foods.
