Beginning Thursday, pregnant women have a new way to stay healthy. And all they need is a cell phone! Here's the best part -- it's free.
The government's new text4baby service, with corporate sponsors and academic support, delivers messages to help promote a healthy pregnancy. With 90 percent of the public carrying mobile phones, texting is a powerful way to deliver vital information.
The service could not be easier to use. Texting the word "baby" to 511411 gets you signed up. You'll be asked your due date or the age of your baby if already born, since text4baby provides health advice through a pregnancy and right through your baby's first year.
Dr. Dayna Salasche, of Northwestern Specialists for Women, thinks it's a great idea.
"I can't say enough about the importance of good pre-natal healthcare, and if this encourages more people to be more informed and to be advocates for their health and their baby's health, then I think it's great," Dr. Salasche told CBS station WBBM-TV in Chicago.
Her patient, Amanda Callahan, is 36 weeks pregnant. She says the more information the better.
"I've definitely been doing my own research and trying to answer my own questions online, so if the information could come to me, that would be great," Callahan said.
The text4baby service is not only free, but cell phone carriers have agreed not to charge for the three times per week text messages.
To sign up, text "baby" to 511411.
