Dr. Dave Offers Advice To Beat Stress
DENVER (CBS4) ―
A new survey says Denver is the most stressed city in America.
A Web poll from the American Psychological Association found more than 75 percent of the folks who live in Denver say they're stressed. So it sounds like Denver residents are not doing such a good job dealing with stress. But CBS4 Medical Editor Dr. Dave Hnida has some advice.
"I think one problem is the nation's stress levels have been high for too long," Hnida said. "So we just tire out and get overwhelmed."
Hnida said the best way to sum it up is Denverites are too stressed to deal with stress. They've given up on the coping mechanism that worked well in years past.
"We get trapped into a bad cycle of sleepless nights, headaches and teeth grinding," Hnida said. "That's to say nothing of a jump in rates of high blood pressure and other stress related illnesses."
Hnida said it's time to call a time out and first look at what people are doing that are not necessarily good ways to cope.
There's been a big jump in bingeing more on chocolate, ice cream, cookies and chips. Also, more people are skipping meals.
"This is extra bad since a missed meal makes a body produce adrenalin which, as you know, makes you more jumpy," Hnida explained.
Another not-so-hot coping mechanism is surfing the Internet. People now spend more time in front of their computers mindlessly going from Web site to Web site.
"This is especially bad if you're reading a lot of bad news," Hnida said.
Denverites might want to consider the Top 4 stress relievers, which according to the survey they are doing less and less. In some case half of what they were doing a year ago.
Hnida said listening to music 20 minutes a day is a nice prescription.
"It changes the brain chemistry to a more calm mixture."
He says exercise, spending more time with friends and getting plenty of quiet time, whether praying, going to church or meditating are also good ideas.
