Group Reports High Levels Of Smoke In DIA Lounges
DENVER (CBS4) ―
A new study shows the levels of smoke inside the smoking lounges at Denver International Airport are much higher than allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The Colorado Tobacco Education and Prevention Alliance said the air in the smoking lounges at DIA is worse than the air in Denver during the Hayman Fire in 2002.
The alliance took samples and had them tested. The group said the results show the air is dangerous to the health of airport workers.
The Aviator's Lounge on Concourse B had the highest levels with readings 10 times the EPA standards for smoke in the workplace.
"We know it can be very hazardous," said R.J. Ours of the American Cancer Society. "Second-hand smoke contributes to heart disease, lung disease, cancer, asthma."
The alliance said it will use the results of the study to make a push for banning all smoking at the airport.
The owner of one smoking lounge on Concourse C told CBS4 it has ventilation equipment that meets EPA standards.
Quiznos and SkyPort, which own other lounges at DIA, did not respond to CBS4's calls.
