It's a growing problem across the country -- what to do with old or unused medications.
Sunday in Littleton an organization called Operation Medicine Cabinet helped people dispose of their pills in a safe, eco-friendly way. The medicines can end up contaminating the water supply.
The expired pills collected will be incinerated. Drugs that are still good will be given to Project Cure for needy people around the world.
Sonya Canavan handed over two bags full of drugs after going through her medicine cabinet.
"I was really surprised," Canavan said. "I never know what to do with the old medicine. I know you're not suppose to flush it or dump it down the sink."
Kim Dahlquist with Operation Medicine Cabinet says that's a big problem.
"There is not a take-back program; most states and the federal government don't have options for people to take them back to a pharmacy or take them back to the doctor," Dahlquist said. "So nobody really knows what to do with them."
Those with questions about drug disposal should check with their pharmacist.
