Bringing A Bit Of Nature Inside Improves Health
DENVER (CBS4) ―
Most people realize that getting out for a walk can lift their spirits, but a series of new studies show bringing a bit of nature indoors can improve our health as well.
Researchers at the University of Rochester say nature makes people nicer and healthier, improves immunity and healing times as well as lowering blood pressure.
Even a 10 minute walk in winter weather makes a difference, although the studies find its best if that walk is in a park-like setting.
For people stuck inside, just being a near a window with the blinds raised may offer the same benefits.
Looking at pictures of nature also appears to help. That means choosing calendars, screensavers and computer backgrounds with pictures of trees, sunsets, mountains or oceans can help.
"Buy lots of plants," said CBS4 Medical Editor Dr. Dave Hnida. "They don't even have to be real ones. Artificial plants and flowers can boost moods.
"And listening to ocean waves, chirping birds, or a gentle rain can also help."
