Runner Raises Thousands For Charity Team

Written for the Web by CBS4 Special Projects Producer Libby Smith

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) ― Dr. Tom Bolan does training runs in the hills around his suburban Aurora home, but running is not his favorite thing to do.

"If I had to choose I would not run, but with the motivation of the Team in Training and the Leukemia Society, that's the only reason I can force myself out there," Bolan told CBS4.

Bolan is motivated by much more than the team; the battle against blood cancers is a personal mission for him.

"My youngest daughter Allison, now at 14, is a two-time leukemia survivor," Bolan explained.

Allison was diagnosed at 2 years old. She went through a 2-year regime of chemotherapy and aggressive treatment which cured the cancer. But at age 5, she relapsed and had to go through the whole process again.

"It just breaks your heart to see what they're going through and she was so tough. She was so strong. She was so brave, even at that age," Bolan explained.

Now, nearly 10 years later, Allison cheers her father on as he logs the miles and hosts fundraisers through his chiropractic office, friends and family.

"Everyone is more than generous."

Altogether, Bolan has raised $2,000 this year for a team that hopes to collect $300,000 in the fight against leukemia and lymphoma.

"The whole goal every year is that they get closer and closer to finding the combination of things that are going to make the difference, and I think they will find a cure for blood cancers."
