Woman Meets Blood Donors Who Saved Her Life
by Molly Hughes
DENVER (CBS4) ―
Bonfils Blood Center set up a rare meeting Thursday between a new mother who needed blood during a delivery to survive and the people who donated.
Hays Padrnos' daughter, Ella, is just a year old and Hays is thankful to be around to help her after a brush with death.
"I was loosing just tons of blood," Hays said.
When Ella was born, Hays started bleeding uncontrollably.
"They were indicating that she could really die," Hays' husband Dan said.
She required 22 units of blood products to save her life.
It was the kindness of 22 strangers that saved Hays' life. They were just ordinary people who took some time out of their day to donate blood.
"You don't really appreciate it until it's something that you need," Hays said.
Now, she appreciates every blood donor and she got to meet five of the people who saved her life. A thank you is icing on the cake for the folks who donated. They've been donating blood for years, but they say it's nice to put a face to their efforts.
"It's a wonderful feeling inside to see that you've helped someone, especially a young mother with young children," said one of the donors. "That's really exciting to be able to see the person that my blood went to," said another."
For Hays and her daughter, thank you just doesn't seem like enough.
"How I can really let them know that what they've done has changed our life and saved our family?" Hays said.
Blood donations drop by 20 percent during the summer months.
