We all know we should eat a wide variety of healthy foods for best nutrition. However, it is easy to just eat the same old things week after week because we feel intimidated by foods we don't know how to prepare. Here are some ideas on how to expand your food base.
Most grocery stores have information about the produce they sell that tells you about its nutritional profile and gives suggestions on preparation or recipes using that food.
If you are not sure if you will like a particular fruit or vegetable, some stores such as Whole Foods will gladly offer a sample
remember it's their job.
You can find plenty of information about foods you are unfamiliar with on the Internet. It's as easy as typing in the name of the food on Google.com.
Also search the Internet for healthy recipes that include the food you are introducing yourself to. Here are just a few web sites to get you started:

- Host a New Food party with friends to introduce yourselves to even more foods and to share recipe ideas.
- Health food stores such as Whole Foods have pamphlets on the basics of cooking grains and legumes. Try a new grain such as quinoa for a super fast, protein-packed tasty alternative to rice and potatoes.
- Dine out at ethnic restaurants to get inspiration on trying unfamiliar foods and seasonings.
- Trying a new food is an example of a small change that you can start today. Go to americaonthemove.org to get some more ideas of small changes for a healthier lifestyle.
