Being healthy can also mean being green.
We've become much more aware of our impact on the environment and the variety of ways we can reduce our carbon footprint.
What many don't realize is that a few small changes to make your lifestyle healthier can also improve the health of your planet.
For example, by commuting by foot or bike instead of by car you'll add activity to your day while reducing harmful emissions.
In addition, buying locally at your neighborhood farmer's market provides you with fresh, delicious produce that you'll enjoy cooking with versus the less flavorful produce that's had to travel thousands of miles to get to your plate.
If you ride your bike to the market, that's even better.
Here are some other ideas for making healthier choices that also benefit the environment:
-- Commute to work or school by bike: Seek out trails and bike lanes that can get you from here to there safely.
-- If you're using public transportation, that's great also! To add some activity to your ride, get off a few stops early and walk the rest of the way.
-- When running errands, drive to the city center, park your car in a central location and do all your errands by foot.
-- Stay hydrated by carrying a non-disposable water bottle with you.
-- Plan your week's meals around what's fresh at the farmer's market this week.
-- Take it one step further and plant a garden to grow your own fruits and vegetables. Gardening is a great source of physical activity and those that grow their own fruits and vegetables are much more likely to meet the daily recommendations.
Try one or all of these small changes to make your day more healthfully green!
