From his Denver home, Dr. Shou-Ching Tang watched the destruction of his homeland play out in television reports. An earthquake that registered 8.0 on the Richter scale reduced the area where Tang grew up to rubble.
"When the tragedy happened, it really hit hard and I sympathize with all the victims," Tang told CBS4.
Tang has been in constant contact with his parents since the quake happened. His mother and father are also doctors, working in the Medical School of Sichuan University. The West China Hospital is the largest local tertiary hospital in the area. It's located only 60 miles from the epicenter. It has become the triage center for thousands of victims in that area and it's in desperate need of new supplies.
"They need more medical supplies than money, which is what we're trying to do," Tang said.
Tang and several other colleagues put together the China Relief Fund. Right now they are working to raise money to ship medical supplies to central China. The group is working with another Colorado-based non-profit called Project C.U.R.E. In a Centennial warehouse, volunteers sort donated medical equipment. The group's mission is to collect medical supplies and equipment and ship it to developing countries.
"Our container arrives to save somebody's life. It's hard to put an exact number on the lives that we save," said Vice President of Operations, George Roberge.
Project C.U.R.E. has already put together one shipment of medical supplies. Tang and his group arranged to have it airlifted in. Now the groups want to send three more containers of equipment, but they need money to pay for the shipping.
Tang and his colleagues are putting together a free concert to raise the shipping money. China Earthquake Relief Concerts are scheduled for Saturday, June 14 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and then again from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Kenneth King Academic & Performing Arts Center located at 855 Lawrence Street, Denver.
