DENVER (CBS4) ― At the Personal Training Group in Broomfield, Mary Lanzavechia, her daughter Caitlin, and Caitlin's friend Emily got a free lesson in fitness. The women worked with a trainer learning exercises that work every muscle group.

"I love it. I'm energized and ready to keep going. It's so much fun and they're really thorough on how to do it," Mary told CBS4.

This is her first time working with a personal trainer. The Personal Training Group offered the free session to anyone participating in the "Get Fit, Stay Fit Challenge". America on the Move hosted the 8-week challenge to get Broomfield residents thinking about making small changes that lead to healthier lifestyles. 375 residents signed up for the challenge. Each of them got a pedometer to track their steps, they had weekly weigh-ins and the chance to participate in programs about nutrition and healthy cooking.

"I saw an ad and thought 'I'm going to do that for myself this year'. Then my daughter and her girlfriend joined," Mary recalled.

"I wanted to support my mom and gain some muscle weight," Caitlin said.

"I wanted to get more toned and keep up with my mom on walks and stuff," said Emily.

Together, the three took the 8-week challenge. They track their steps on the pedometers, and talked a lot about nutrition and healthy choices. They also expanded their workout routines with free trips to the Broomfield Recreation Center and the personal training session.

"I've lost a couple of pounds and it's been kinda easier because you weigh-in every week," Emily said.

"Although the scale hasn't been a big revelation, like, 'oh wow, look at all the weight!', I can tell my clothes are fitting looser so thing are toning up," Mary added.

More than just loosing weight and shaping up, Mary wanted this to be a learning lesson for the teens. She hoped a challenge like this would plant the seed of healthy habits at a young age.

"It's important to feel good in your skin and feeling good in your skin comes with a fitness that comes out of training, stepping, and being active," she said.
