New Device Gives Alternative To Liposuction

by Shaun Boyd
DENVER (CBS4) ― A local engineer created new liposuction technology that's revolutionizing cosmetic surgery.

LipoSelection is a new way of removing fat using sound waves.

Bill Comino, an engineer at Sound Surgical Technologies in Louisville, designed and manufactured the "VASER" device which uses ultrasonic energy to target only fatty tissue.

"Ultrasonic technology has a tissue selectivity aspect to it, meaning that it will aggressively target some tissue and not others," Comino said. "So what we want to do is target the fatty cells but not other tissue in the body."

Unlike liposuction, which tears out fat and surrounding tissue, LipoSelection selects or targets only fat, than dissolves and drains it.

"It's not only important what we take out but also what we leave behind," said Dr. Stephen Goldstein with Denver Face and Body. "This truly is a new revolutionary way of thinking. It's a new philosophical approach."

Dr. Goldstein is one of about 600 surgeons worldwide who are currently using the VASER which comes with different probes for different parts of the body.

"It's much like an artist picking up different paintbrushes looking for a certain look," Dr. Goldstein said.

Anna Pons, a 40-year-old mother of two, thought about liposuction for years but wasn't sure it was the right procedure for her so she tried LipoSelection.

"Before surgery I was between a 10 and 12 pant size, now I can slide into a 6 and 8," Pons said.

While recovery can take a day to a week, Pons said in her case, she had little pain, no swelling and definitely no regrets.

"I'll keep the kids and I'll keep Dr. Goldstein, let's put it that way," Pons said.

Dr. Goldstein said the price of LipoSelection is comparable to liposuction and depends on how many parts of the body are involved.

It can be done under local anesthesia if the area is small but it often involves general anesthesia.
