Feds To Propose Rules For Squeezing Oil From Rock

WASHINGTON (AP) ― The Bush administration wants to set the stage before leaving office for developing oil shale in the Rockies that could yield up to 800 billion barrels of oil.

The Interior Department is scheduled to unveil proposed regulations tomorrow for a program to sell oil shale leases on federal lands in the Green River Basin of Colorado, Wyoming and Utah.

Bush said last month that the oil shale lands in the Rockies "alone would equal current annual oil imports for more than 100 years."

But Western officials have urged the federal government to move slowly because of the potential impacts on water supplies, air and water quality and communities. Industry officials have also said the technology to extract the oil from shale deposits is still being developed and commercial production is years off.
