Commerce City Company Takes Out Recycling

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4) ―

In 2007, Americans set a new record for recycling paper. Approximately 56 percent of all paper was tossed in the recycling bin. but for one man in Commerce City, that's not enough.

Pedro McMillan runs "Pedro's Planet," an office supply store which offers an environmental incentive to customers.

"We're the only ones in the country that I know of who has a program where we deliver office supplies and pick up office waste for recycling."

McMillan picks up all recyclables for free. That includes printer cartridges, aluminum cans, phone books and paper. Last year Pedro's Planet recycled 600,000 pounds of office paper.

And McMillan said he is getting more and more questions about recycling.

"People are calling us all the time wondering what we do, what we take, how much it costs. Recycling is big."

According to McMillan businesses are looking for more ways to recycle. One of customers of Pedro's Planet is Metropolitan Homes. That company said having office paper picked up for recycling fits in its business model perfectly.

A company spokeswoman told CBS4 having Pedro's Planet pick up paper for recycling was a great way to transfer what it does on the jobsite as a green builder to what it does in the office.

McMillan said the recycling part of his business is not only helping the environment, it's helping his bottom line. He saw a 30 percent increase in business last year.

"I attribute our growth to the attention people are paying to the environment. They are starting to seek out companies like Pedro's Planet because they know what direction they want to take."
