Denver Zoo is celebrating a major environmental milestone.
On Wednesday, city officials announced the zoo is the first in the country to win international certification for its environmental management systems.
"If we're to achieve Denver Zoo's vision of making a better world for animals, than we have to make a better world for people too." said Craig Piper, CEO of Denver Zoo.
Piper offered several examples of what makes the Zoo so "green."
-- A new gasification program will allow 90 percent of the animal waste to be converted into useable energy.
-- The zoo has reduced water usage by 50 percent over the past decade.
-- Zoo employees are provided with RTD eco-passes.
-- The zoo buys locally and avoids purchasing items that must be shipped from other parts of the world.
-- Recycling is promoted and encouraged at the zoo.
Sharing the stage with Gidget, a 250-pound sea lion, Mayor John Hickenlooper said the zoo's achievement is a boost to the workforce there.
"It creates a consciousness that naturally improves people's focus to their jobs," Hickenlooper said.
The certification was awarded by the International Organization of Standardization.
