One good way to keep old electronics and cell phones out of landfills is to trade them in. Several retailers are getting involved in the buyback program and it easy to do.
John Covele writes applications for the iPhone, so he wants the latest and greatest version for himself. So when the new 3G iPhone came out, he went online to a Web site called NextWorth.com to see how much money he could get by trading in his old iPhone.
"So for me I got $189 for my old iPhone without having to haggle and deal with people," Covele said.
The process was simple. He answered a few questions about the make, model and condition of the phone, and within seconds he knew how much money NextWorth would offer. He printed out a mailing label and shipped the phone off to NextWorth.
Covele chose to get his $189 in an Amazon gift card, but he could have gotten cash or a gift card from other popular retailers.
Stores like Best Buy have similar buyback programs. To this point it's been only online, but now consumers can bring certain items into the store for trade-in.
"Any sort of laptop you purchased at Best Buy at pretty much any point in time; any Apple laptop, any iPods or any mobile phones," said Matt Fritz with Best Buy.
The product must be fully functional. The price is based on the physical condition of the item and everything has to have a Best Buy purchase receipt. For those who don't have a Best Buy receipt, they can dig it up from their database.
Covele is now looking to see how much money he can get for all the other electronics he no longer uses.
Cell phones and iPods are the most popular items for buyback.
Most of the buyback programs say they will responsibly recycle electronics for free if they don't have any resale value. The others are refurbished and sold online on sites like eBay, Amazon, Overstock and DealTree.com.
