State Offers Incentive For Buying Green Lawn Mower

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) ― A green rebate program has been started to try to clean up lawn care in Colorado. Now Colorado residents can get money back for going green with their lawn mowers.

The program promotes the sale and use of electric mowers to get rid of the gas, the noise and air pollution.

A lawn mower exchange in Greeley is one of a number of similar efforts to recycle old gas-powered mowers. The exchange offers a discount on an electric lawn mower.

"They're clean; no gas or oil," Tom Parent with Neuton Power Equipment said. "They're much better for the environment, lightweight (and) easy to use."

Parent's company works along with the Regional Air Quality Council selling the $400 rechargeable, battery-powered mowers for half-price to people like Tom and Gwyn Aten, who dumped their gas guzzler and went home with a new electric.

"I have a group of friends who are currently a little more affluent," Gwyn said. "They're putting in solar systems and everything right now. So were all doing whatever we can, and this helps."

The Air Quality Council says, gallon for gallon, gas mowers add to ozone pollution far more than cars; especially mowers made before emissions rules changed 10 years ago.

"Lawn mowers manufactured before 1997 are the main culprits," Trevor Noel with the Regional Air Quality Council said. "They're the ones that are the main polluters; the ones we like to see get thrown in the bin."

The Neuton Mower Company has teamed up for efforts like this across the country, but there are many other electric mowers on the market. The half-price deal was special for residents in Weld County: but anyone in the state can get up to $50 back. The Regional Air Quality Council will give Colorado residents a $25 rebate on any electric mower bought, and another $25 to recycle an old gas mower.
