'Eco-Moms' Battle Against Climate Change
(CBS4)
Mothers across the country are banding together to battle climate change and other ecological hazards.
They've joined the non-profit "Eco-Mom Alliance." It's a growing group that wants to help save the planet, one household at a time. The alliance sponsors a 10-step eco-challenge that motivates mothers to do everything from composting to recycling.
Founder Kimberly Pinkson travels to eco-mom parties to share her new ideas for conservation.
"We just ask people just take one at a time. Choose one that's doable for you. That way, it's very real and tangible and easily accessible," she said.
The Eco-Mom Alliance started in 2006, and has since grown to 11,000 members. Some are as far away as India and Nigeria. Members share tips on using non-toxic cleaning products and show ways to prepare waste-free school lunches.
Mothers say the program inspires them.
"You can do little things and feel good about that. Then, once you have the momentum from that, you can move on to the next one and the next one. We're part of a sisterhood and we can be part of this movement," says Jennifer Monson of Los Angeles.
Pinkson also said it doesn't necessarily take extra time and money to be green. It just takes creativity.
"Like we always said, we're not asking you to change the world. We're just asking you to rethink what you already do," she said.
