The school district in Eaton is saving money and helping the environment thanks to improvements made possible in part by a program called "Performance Contracting" by the Governor's Energy Office.
The district's buildings had a long list of repairs and improvements. The program showed administrators what kind of energy saving changes could be made and how to pay for it.
One of the biggest improvements was in the school district's pool. Solar panels now help keep the water warm, reducing the energy load on an old boiler.
"The 46-year-old boiler used to run 24/7 to keep the pool warm," said Randy Miller, the district's superintendent.
The district also installed more efficient lighting, new ductwork, better plumbing and window upgrades in most of its buildings.
All of the improvements are expected to save the district nearly $96,000 a year.
