Program Brings Free Recycling To Denver Apartments

DENVER (CBS4) ― The City of Denver is testing a pilot program to provide free recycling for large apartment and condo complexes.

Currently any complex with more than seven units has to pay for trash and recycling services.

Denver City Councilwoman Jeanne Robb said she received so many calls for the service, she decided to find a way to fill the need.

"The demand is huge, and when you think of all the condos, think of how much recycling that would be," she said as she pointed out a dumpster as tall as she is. The dumpster was completely full and much of the material could be recycled.

For people living in apartments, recycling offers challenges in already small spaces.

"Before we had to accumulate this in the garage," said Joe Ely, who lives in a Denver apartment. "Then drive it up to the recycle center. Now we just simply take it down to the alley."

Robb was able to get a grant to pay for a test pick-up program with Waste Management. The pilot program is being tested at eight buildings in the Capitol Hill neighborhood for one year.

"After a year I'm hoping that it will be a slam dunk," said Joyce Bartell with Waste Management. "That everybody will decide that this is quite workable, it's manageable and easy to do and it's affordable."
