Computer Recycling A Hit In Westminster

An effort to recycle old computers and electronic equipment was so popular, it created a traffic jam in Westminster Saturday.

The Dalby Education Institute sponsored the free recycling event. The line stretched from the drop off site down Church Ranch Boulevard.

Dumping old computers and electronic equipment in a landfill is bad for the environment because old computers can have lots of toxins.

"It just tells you what the state of technology is you know," recycler Butch Miller said. "You keep changing it over. It's great for marketing, but this is what you end up with."

Pack rats unloaded everything from an old tape answering machine to a video game joy stick.

"Basically, if it has a cord, we can take it," Nancy Bodnar with the Dalby Education Institute said.

"We're seeing some dinosaurs here from the 80s," radio personality Robbie Knight said. "So people have been hanging onto this stuff rather than just tossing it in the garbage. People really wanted a better way to get rid of it."

Three truck loads full of equipment will cost Dalby roughly a $1,000, but they say the work they are doing is priceless.

"Obviously, what we're doing in the long run is worthwhile," Bodnar said.

Dalby said it will sponsor another recycling event in conjunction with Earth Day later this spring.
