Rally Held For Climate Change At State Capitol

DENVER (CBS4) ― A new number has entered the discussion over global warming -- 350 parts per million is considered the highest safe level for the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.

Scientists also say the current carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere is approaching 390 and it needs to come back down to 350. How to get there will be debated in the U.S. Senate and worldwide this fall.

Meanwhile the argument continues over how serious global warming is or if it's enough to change the way the American economy is run.

"A leader from CU, another from Colorado State have not made the case that we have a catastrophic crisis developing. They say there are some trends that disturb them, but when we pressed them a leader from Colorado, a leader from Colorado State were unwilling to say there's reason enough to slam the brakes on the economy," said John Andrews, Colorado Christian University Policy Director.

"You know there are other scientists who will take a counter viewpoint. You know that number of scientists is very, very small right now. Many of those scientists are funded not by objective peer-reviewed grant processes, (they are) funded by the coal and oil industry and more than anything that number is incredibly small," CU climate researcher John Miller said.

This week the U.S. Senate will discuss ways businesses can put a price on pollution and limit it through cap and trade.

In December, 94 nations will meet in Copenhagen to discuss the climate.
