Ritter, Hickenlooper Announce New Colorado Jobs

DENVER (CBS4/AP) ― A Germany-based solar company plans to open its first North American manufacturing site in Denver.

Gov. Bill Ritter and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper joined officials from SMA Solar Technology for the announcement Monday. The company plans to start production next year with 300 employees and a capacity to expand the work force to 700.

The plant will be in east Denver with access to Interstate 70 and a rail line.

SMA produces solar inverters, which convert the direct current generated by residential solar panels into alternating current for the electrical grid.

Ritter has made Colorado's renewable energy industry a priority of his administration. Companies that have opened plants in the state include Danish wind-turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems.

"In every part of Colorado we're helping to create what we call sustainable jobs in an industry that's going to last for decades and decades," Ritter said. "I don't have to tell you what new manufacturing means to Colorado."

SMA analyzed about 10 other locations but decided to build in Colorado. One of the reasons is the state's brand and efforts towards a new energy economy. It also picked Colorado because of the talent of the workforce and the sunshine. It pays to be in a state that has about 300 days of sun.

SMA is looking for management positions, technicians and construction workers.

The average salary will be about $30,000 a year.
