John Carter is a Pepsi Center worker who knows it's going to get tough to get there. "I have to get to work some kind of way," said Carter, who will work making the food delegates eat at the convention. He was sitting at the light rail stop at Union Station. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday it'll be closed. "RTD should provide some kind of remedy for people in our position," he says.
They have, believes Regional Transportation District's Scott Reed. Both the Union Station and the Pepsi Center light rail stops will be shut down.
"Because of the way that light rail operates. With the Pepsi Station closure and then down to Denver Union Station, they simply did not want any passengers aboard light rail going immediately past the Pepsi Center for Security purposes," Reed said.
So commuters heading in or out of the city from or to the south will have to get off their light rail trains before that.
"For our light rail service, the C and E lines will not go all the way to Denver Union station, so people will need to de-board," Reed said.
Commuters can change trains at the Broadway, Alameda or 10th and Osage stops and switch there to the other rail lines heading into downtown. To go to Union Station, take the 16th Street shuttle.
That's one problem. There will be another problem Thursday when the convention moves to Invesco Field for Barack Obama's acceptance speech. Interstate 25 will be shut down around Invesco.
"Actually we've been pleasantly surprised looking at the detours that will effect our normal routes," said Reed. Thursday evening's commute to the north shouldn't be too bad he said. "Because the HOV lanes are going to be open northbound so many of our routes coming from downtown do use those HOV lanes, so that is a huge step forward for us."
But expect the closing of I-25 will slow traffic on city streets.
"The main thing is people will get to their destination; it may be kind of by a circuitous route," Reed said.
Everything will take longer. That will be especially important for anyone who intends to go to Obama's speech. There will be no parking at Invesco Field. Taking a shuttle is an option. They will run up the Broadway corridor up to Coors Field. Remember this: security at Invesco Field will be very tight and will take a long time, so the last runs for those shuttles will be at 2 p.m.
