With the governor's race in Colorado now wide open, there's a lot of speculation about who's running and who has a chance to win.
Pollster Lori Weigel says Colorado voters have a romantic ideal about what it means to be a Coloradan.
"Despite the fact so many of us live along the Front Range in urban and suburban environments," said Weigel, "We still like that rancher out on his horse."
Even a guy running for mayor of Denver.
"The first ad that they played he (Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper) was sort of evoking that cowboy image," Weigel said. "There was Western music as he strode up to the parking meter to really take on the establishment."
Political experts say it's about positioning.
"The really successful ones have that connection to the land the outdoors, sort of that Western, independent spirit," said Weigel. "You have everything from rock climbing Mark Udall to cowboy hat-wearing Ken Salazar. Even a native Coloradan has to tell people why they love Colorado and connect with our voters on that Colorado level."
But it's a way to show they're aware of the issues important to us. As one political expert told said, part of it is simply how politicians market themselves.
