Campers might have to sit the summer out.

With Champ Camp shut down, young people with asthma and other respiratory ailments are hurting for a place to go this summer.
Young Geoff Douglass is bummed. "It just didn't seem right that the H1N1 virus had to come right now," Geoff said after getting the news. "People will say that I can't breathe right, stuff like that, but Champ Camp taught me everything I needed to know about my asthma."
Geoff's mother, Yvonne, is okay with the decision of the American Lung Association to close the camp this summer because of worries over swine flu. "It's regrettable, but it's better. I would hate for my son to come back ten times sicker."
National Jewish Health's Dr. Kirstin Carel understands the predicament. "I think for the Champ Camp specifically given that it's targeted at children that have asthma and perhaps had more serious problems with their asthma than other children do that it's probably a good decision."
When asked whether parents should be allowing other children without chronic health issues to go to camp, Carel said, "you know I think they should be able to."
Carel said parents should look for signs of illness before sending their kids to camp and avoid infection by washing their hands frequently and using sanitizers. But for now, if camp is open, move ahead.
The CDC has also prepared a
Web page with instructions about and for camps.
