Live With The Animals In Remote Getaway

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) ―

Tucked away in a remote spot of northern Colorado is a cabin which offers solitude and a chance to live with the animals, but not much else.

Stub Creek Canyon is located in Roosevelt National Forest.

It's a favorite destination for Cheryl Cambra and her family. "This is a really well appointed cabin," she told CBS4's Paul Day and Tom Meyers. "What I really like about it is the knotty pine paneling."

The forest service owns the cabin which used to serve as an old ranger station.

Now it has two bedrooms and a fold-out sofa in the living room to offer living quarters for tourists.

The cabin has a stove, fridge and even a micro-wave all powered with electricity so visitors are not exactly roughing it but from screen doors to a bell to call everyone to dinner, Stub Creek Cabin has a rustic feel.

A moose is far more likely to drop by than any human but this family knows to keep its distance.

Watching the wildlife is enough reason to visit but the area also offers designated four-wheel drive roads for more adventurous members of the family.

Cambra is a single mother who lives in Denver so heading to Stub Creek Cabin gives her boys a chance to get out of the city to enjoy and learn to respect nature.

A couple of years ago, Cambra said she could make reservations for the cabin on short notice but now her secret is out. These days she needs to book six months in advance.
