Purgatory Ski Resort Bids Farewell To Lodge
DURANGO, Colo. (CBS4) ―
The Purgatory Ski Resort in Durango is hoping as many old employees as possible will head to town April 5 and 6 to say goodbye to Purgy's Day Lodge. After 43 years, the resort is tearing the lodge down.
Loryn Kasten with Purgatory public relations stopped by the CBS4 Morning News on Sunday to talk about Purgy's Party with anchors Shaun Boyd, Arturo Santiago and Jennifer Zeppelin.
"We want to try to have as many as we possibly can," she said in explaining the hunt for former employees. "We've started to hear from people who are really excited to come back, gather with their old friends and celebrate with Purgy's. It's sort of one of those Catch 22s, everyone loves the building but we're ready to see it go down."
"It's a little dated at this point having been up for 43 years," Kasten said. "We're changing the face of the village right now, putting in more upgraded buildings with a lot better amenities. It's time for the building to go."
But Purgy plans on throwing a big party to bring down the building. "We're going to have a big weekend celebration with a lot of live music. We're going to have an on-mountain scavenger hunt and some ski races."
The big party is open to everyone, not just former employees. Lift tickets will be $10 for adults and $5 for children at the resort.
Purgatory closes for the season on April 6 but resort officials point out Durango is great to visit any time of year.
"It's usually really warm with lots of blue skies. There's so much to do in Durango, the historic train, Mesa Verde, so it's a good weekend getaway."
